Why stainless steel?
I made a lot of prototypes with different materials and looked at a lot of designs before settling on stainless steel. It's mainly because I can take what is probably the simplest design for a pickup and make something durable, customisable and great sounding. And shiny things are nice.
Does the construction of your pickups affect the sound?
The short answer is no. The pickup flatwork is laser cut from 304 stainless steel. The magnetic field of the pole pieces passes through it as though it's not there.
The long answer is that the flatwork has very low magnetic permeability, almost negligible. The magnetic field is not diverted by the flatwork. That and the pole pieces and flatwork are earthed, which makes for a quiet single coil. The earth connection is made be extending the pickups earth to a screw fixing on the base. If you want to change phase you can snip the wire and easily add another earth connection.
Why are they wrapped with string?
Wrapping with string is a proven means of protection and also dampens vibration. It also comes in lots of nice colours.
How are your pickups potted?
I use a varnish designed for potting transformer coils. It remains flexible when set and protects well against moisture. Before winding the pole pieces are taped and the interior of the flatwork is given a coat of varnish. After winding the coil is given a couple of coats of varnish. The varnish doesn't move very far into the coil so my pickups are partially potted.
How long will I have to wait for my pickups?
At the moment it's just me hand building and winding the pickups to order, it will take me 3-4 weeks to make them after you place the order. Depending on what you need and where you are ordering from in the world, these timings could vary and I may be able to get them to you sooner. I'm meticulous in how they are finished so I want them to be of the highest quality when they get to you. I try to get stuff out as soon as I can.
How much do you charge for shipping?
If you're in the UK I don't charge. If you're in Europe I'll charge you £10 and for the rest of the world it's £18. Rates are taken care of at the checkout.
Do I need to pay VAT?
As a small producer I am currently under what's known as the 'VAT ceiling' in the UK. This means I don't have to add VAT to my prices or deduct it, so the price you see is what you pay.
Do I need to pay import taxes?
Yes, I'm afraid so. You are required to pay any import duties and taxes.
Are your pickups guaranteed
I offer a lifetime guarantee to the original purchaser. If the one of my pickups fails you can return it to me for a replacement or a rewind.
What if I don't like them?
If you're not happy with your purchase post it back to me within 30 days of your receiving it and I'll refund you the purchase price (postage excluded).
Can you help me with installation?
Yes, I can give you advice and point you in the direction of wiring diagrams and quality instructional materials.
